Malaysia’s Covid19 fatality rate lower than global figures

PETALING JAYA: The country’s Covid-19 fatality rates are much lower compared to other countries globally despite recording higher deaths lately, say health experts.

As of Saturday, Malaysia’s case fatality rate (CFR) was 0.9%, said Universiti Malaya Department of Social and Preventive Medicine Faculty of Medicine Prof Dr Moy Foong Ming.

“By comparing total Covid-19 deaths and CFR in selected countries and global trends, Malaysia’s statistics are on the low side, ” she said.

CFR is the ratio between total confirmed deaths and total confirmed cases.

According to the Our World in Data Covid-19 dataset in Asean region, Singapore recorded the lowest CFR with less than 0.1% while Thailand, the Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam and Indonesia recorded 1.6%, 1.9%, 2%, 2.4%, 3.1% and 3.5%, respectively, as of Saturday.

Outside Asean, the United States recorded a CFR of 2.7% while the United Kingdom (6.3%), South Korea (1.8%) and Japan (1.8%).

The statistics by the Health Ministry’s Institute for Clinical Research on Oct 13 noted that the country’s CFR was at 1% which meant that for every 100 person infected with the virus, one person might die.

Universiti Malaya epidemiologist Prof Datuk Dr Awang Bulgiba Awang Mahmud agreed that deaths seemed to be occurring more frequently but rates were actually falling.

“Malaysia’s case fatality rate was around 1.4% in June and it’s now 0.9%. This fall is actually due to the much larger increase in the number of cases, for example, the denominator has increased faster than the numerator. So, the rising number of deaths is keeping with the rising number of cases and is to be expected, ” he said.

But he said the CFR was a rather simplistic way of calculating the death rate, adding that it was also difficult to make direct comparisons with other countries’ death rates as they defined Covid-19 deaths differently, and the varying testing rates make it “not really comparable”.

“Worldwide, the trend does show that more older persons are dying of Covid-19 but we need to look at each country’s demographics before making any sweeping conclusion.

“Our death rate is much lower than many countries – the US, UK, Italy, France and Sweden – which have much more developed health systems than us, ” he said.

In terms of the death rates per million population, Universiti Putra Malaysia medical epidemiologist and biostatistician Assoc Prof Dr Malina Osman said Malaysia’s death rate was lower compared to the global rates.

She said Malaysia only recorded six deaths per million population compared to Indonesia at 45 and the Philippines at 60. Singapore had five deaths per million population.

Since the beginning of the third wave of infections, the country has seen 44 deaths just in October compared to the last three months.

Malaysia recorded a total of 187 deaths as of yesterday.

The Health Ministry’s statistics showed that more than 65% of the deaths were those aged above 60; the highest deaths were recorded among those in their 60s at 30.6%.

Those in their 50s recorded 19.1% of the deaths, while people in their 70s recorded 21%. Those aged above 80 recorded 14%.

But those who were less than 30, between 30 and 39, and those between 40 and 49 reported lower death rates at 2.5%, 5.7% and 7%, respectively.

The statistics also revealed that the fatality involved mostly men (72%).

More than 80% of the victims have at least one underlying medical condition.

The data showed that 70% of those who had died had diabetes followed by high blood pressure (64.9%), heart disease (23.4%), high cholesterol (19%), kidney disease (16.2%), lung disease (8.4%), cancer (5.2%) and liver disease (1.9%).

Dr Moy noted that obesity was an important risk factor that had been reported in other countries, but not reported in our country’s data probably because BMI is not routinely collected.

Cara bagaimana untuk "Disable Protected View in Microsoft Excel"

Seringkali kita akan mendapat mesej seperti di bawah: Protected View, Be careful- files form the internet can contain viruses. Unless you need to edit, it's safer to stay in Protected View.

Klik Options-Trust Center-Trust Center Settings

Malaysian Universities in th QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2020

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s top institution for producing employable graduates is Universiti Malaya (UM).
The oldest university in the country rose two bands and now features in the 141-150 position of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Graduate Employability Rankings 2020.
It was previously in the 161-170 band last year.
QS research director Ben Sowter said all Malaysian universities have either risen or remained in the same position as last year (see table).
“Nine Malaysian universities participated in this edition of the rankings, three more than last year, ” he said in a statement yesterday.
Just behind UM, though without moving up the rankings, is Taylor’s University, which sits in the 201-250 band.
UCSI University and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) are in the 251-300 band with UCSI moving up from the 301-350 band last year while UTAR was previously not ranked.
There are significant disparities between QS’ overall World University Rankings and this exercise, noted Sowter.
“The rankings clearly demonstrate that there is no perfect parallel between an outstanding reputational and research university, and an outstanding nurturer of student career outcomes, ” he added.
This is seen as Taylor’s University outranks UCSI University in this exercise although, in the World University Rankings, it is below UCSI University.
Taylor’s University is in the 551-520 band while UCSI University is at 442 in the QS World University Rankings 2020.
The other Malaysian institutions in the ranking are Management and Science University, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Pahang, Universiti Sains Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Mara (see table).
Globally, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is No.1 and retains the dual honour of being both world No.1 in the QS World University Rankings 2020, and for employability.
Stanford University is second and University of California, Los Angeles, is third.
The QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2020 offer data regarding the relationship between university choice and career outcomes.
To explore the university-employability relationship, QS uses a unique five-metric method that captures each institution’s regard among 44,000 employers worldwide, alma mater data from 29,000 highly successful individuals, institutional industry partnerships, employer presence on campus, and location-adjusted graduate employment rate.
Sowter said there were 36 new entrants within the Top 500.
There were 758 institutions included in the final evaluation of the rankings with 682 institutions ranked.
Out of that, only 501 institutions were featured in the rankings. - The Star

Why Most Asians Have This Scar On Their Left Arm?

https://www.flickr.com/photos/theemergencyroom/2903749873
They are provided by the Ministry of Health (MOH) as part of the Expanded Programme of Immunisation (EPI). The visibility of a scar plays a role as it is an important index in the vaccination program. A child with no scar present would be given the BCG vaccine at Standard One in school.

If you find such a distinctive scar pictured above on one of someone's arms, usually their left, even on men and women of all ages, it's most probably a mark that was left due to the inoculation of the BCG, or 'bacille Calmette-Guerin' vaccine, through injection.

Following the inoculation of the vaccine, the wound should eventually heal and form a scar that would last for a lifetime. The size and shape of the scar on the arm may differ from individual to individual, but usually people would be left with a puckered scar and its appearance is circular in shape.

But first, why BCG vaccine?
More than three billion people have been vaccinated with BCG since it was first introduced in 1921 to prevent tuberculosis (TB), a disease that spreads from person to person through the air.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), TB can be deadly - killing or debilitating more adults aged between 15 and 59 years than any other disease in the world.

Based on statistics provided by WHO, the largest number of new TB cases occurred in Asia (45% of new cases) followed by Africa (25% of new cases) in 2016.

WHO said that "in the global context, TB in intimately linked to poverty, and control of TB is ultimately a question of justice and human rights".

BCG is one of the most widely used of all current vaccines, but different BCG vaccination policies and practices that have been implemented vary across time and countries over the years of its existence.

For Malaysia, the BCG vaccines are given to newborns at birth.
They are provided by the Ministry of Health (MOH) as part of the Expanded Programme of Immunisation (EPI). The visibility of a scar plays a role as it is an important index in the vaccination program. A child with no scar present would be given the BCG vaccine at Standard One in school.
